Its first edition was in February 1982, in this year, Madrid was in the middle of the Movida Madrileña and the gallery owner Juana de Aizpuru, also known as Juana de Arco, wanted to show the revolution that existed at that time, making Madrid a benchmark called ARCOmadrid, for contemporary art.
From July 7 to 11 of this year 2021, ARCOmadrid, the international contemporary art fair in Spain celebrates its 40th anniversary by bringing together a careful selection of national and international galleries that have exhibited in it during these years.
This exhibition is known worldwide as it brings together the most innovative and recognized creators in the sector.
In addition to the space dedicated to its anniversary, we can find these other spaces:
General program: Galleries, from more than 30 countries, selected by the organizing committee.
ArtsLibris: International Artist Book Fair and Contemporary Edition, a space for exhibitors to be present on the international circuit.
Cultural spaces with the contents of some of the main art centers in Spain.
Sponsor spaces with content created specifically for presentation at ARCOmadrid.
Opening: Space for the discovery of new proposals, focused on galleries with a maximum of seven years history.
ARCOmadrid forum: intense program of debates.
Gastronomic and rest areas: Places where you can have lunch, talk and share the discoveries of the fair.
NEW VIRTUAL SPACE
A novelty is the incorporation of a virtual parallel space to the permanent physical spaces of the galleries that participate in both ARCOmadrid and ARCOlisboa called ARCO E-XHIBITIONS.
This is a flexible and changing space where you can visit some of the exhibitions in 3D and 2D format, getting closer to the works on display.
As every year, it will be held at IFEMA, although it will be the first time it will be held in July due to the changes in the agenda that we continually suffer due to the coronavirus pandemic.
We assume that by July 2021 the world situation is improved, and international movements can be made without risk.
In any case, the current capacity restrictions and the maintenance of the safety distance will be followed, as well as the use of masks and hydroalcoholic gel following the protocol.
